Kalpana Murthy Professional Biography

Kalpana Murthy is a former corporate marketing professional turned Licensed Professional Counselor, Certified EMDR Psychotherapist, and workshop presenter. When working with individual clients or conducting workshops for companies or professional groups, she combines her business skills as a problem-solver and change agent with her training and experience in psychology and counseling. She helps adults identify and resolve how their past is unconsciously coming into play in their present and causing them to not feel good enough, to feel stuck, or to repeat situations in their career or personal life. Ultimately, she helps her clients find meaning in these experiences and have deeper connections with themselves, so they can have more genuine connections with others at work and in their personal life.
As a therapist, she specializes in helping adults quickly overcome the lasting negative effects that stressful or traumatic life experiences have on how they think, feel and behave. She has experience helping clients with anxiety, depression, self-doubt, heartbreak, grief, fear of public speaking, career issues, relationship issues, childhood abuse, abandonment, the effects of self-absorbed parents, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
Prior to opening her own practice, Kalpana worked as a Counselor at The Anxiety & Stress Management Institute and the Georgia Institute of Technology Counseling Center. Her career coaching experience includes work at the Duke University MBA Career Management Center, Emory University MBA Career Management Center and at Right Management, a global outplacement firm, where she helped managers and executives navigate all aspects of career transition and job search. Her career coaching services include: gaining clarity on career interests, self-marketing message strategy, resume writing, interviewing skills, networking skills, offer negotiation, and interpretation of career assessments. She is certified to administer and interpret the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, the Strong Interest Inventory, and the Birkman First Look.
Prior to becoming a Counselor, her career included over 15 years in the fields of marketing and management. She has expertise in the areas of marketing communications, client relationships, team leadership, and improving the operating efficiency of professional service firms. She has held VP and Director level marketing positions, while leading and managing the strategic marketing programs for many national consumer brands working on both the client side and the consulting firm side. In addition, she has provided strategic business writing services for many entrepreneurs offering professional services in a range of industries.
Kalpana earned an MBA from Duke University, a Masters of Science in Professional Counseling from Georgia State University, and a BA from Vanderbilt University. She has specialized training in trauma therapy and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), Brainspotting, and Imaginal Nurturing. EMDR and Brainspotting are approaches to psychotherapy and performance enhancement based on the science of how the brain stores and processes information related to upsetting life experiences including criticism, rejection, humiliation, job loss, relationship endings, emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse and major traumatic events. Imaginal Nurturing is a psychotherapy approach that helps clients connect to and heal younger ego states as a route to developing a more secure sense of self as an adult.
Kalpana is a Licensed Professional Counselor, a National Board Certified Counselor, and a Certified EMDR Psychotherapist trained through The EMDR Institute and certified by the EMDR International Association.
