Understanding Anxiety

Anxiety can include nervousness, worry, fear, panic attacks, automatic negative thoughts, getting stuck on repetitive thoughts, and an inability to focus.

A certain amount of anxiety is normal and helpful in life. It can motivate us to get things done, make changes, try new things, and grow personally and professionally. It can also be your brain’s way of keeping you safe. Fear can be signaling you that something is not right, to be cautious, or to take steps to protect yourself.

The human brain is wired to hold on to information that will keep us physically and emotionally safe. Our brain does this by storing information about experiences where we felt scared, stressed, embarrassed, shame, guilty, trapped or felt a loss of control. Unfortunately, sometimes the information gets stored in our brain in a way that makes us feel in danger, even when we know the situation is safe, and even when we know our negative thoughts are not true.

Anxiety and depression often go hand in hand. When anxiety gets in the way of your relationships or doing activities you want to do, then you can feel sad, discouraged and begin to withdraw from others.

Do You Feel Like You Just Have To Live With It?

Often clients feel that they’ve tried everything to resolve their anxiety, and that the only way to cope is by taking medications that they don’t want to take. There are underlying causes of anxiety, and I enjoy working with clients to identify and address the root causes of anxiety or depression, so they can be themselves and enjoy life more fully.
